Pseudoarthrosis and Osteomyelitis
Pseudoarthrosis, also known as nonunion, is a medical condition that occurs when a fractured bone fails to heal properly, forming a false joint at the fracture site. Because there is no bone healing at this level, the bone remains unstable, which can lead to pain, decreased range of motion, and long-term complications if not treated appropriately.
Insufficient stability at the fracture site
If there is insufficient stability, the bone is unable to heal, resulting in hypertrophic pseudoarthrosis at this level.
Poor vascularization of the fracture bed
Adequate blood supply is essential for healing. Without it, atrophic pseudoarthrosis develops.
Infections
Sometimes the origin of pseudoarthrosis is an infection at the fracture site. In these cases, early management through debridement and bone reconstruction is essential.
How is it treated?
Treatment will depend on the cause of the pseudoarthrosis. If the cause is poor stability, treatment is usually sufficient with a new osteosynthesis system that increases stability, along with the use of non-vascularized bone grafts.
In cases of vascular or infectious origin, or in cases of previous failure with non-vascularized grafts, bone reconstruction with bone flaps that provide their own vascularization is usually necessary, thus increasing the likelihood of union.
