Breast reconstruction with implants
After a mastectomy, breast reconstruction using implants is possible. Sometimes these can be placed directly during the mastectomy surgery, and in other cases, a breast expander must first be placed and then replaced with the implant. The choice of procedure depends on the specific characteristics of the case and the preferences of the patient and surgeon.
Autologous breast reconstruction
This involves repairing the breast using the patient's own tissue without implants. It is currently considered the gold standard, as it does not present the complications that implants can (contractures, infections, etc.) and generally does not require further surgery, achieving long-lasting results. The most common procedure of this type is performed using tissue from the abdomen (DIEP flap), concealing the abdominal scar and transferring the tissue to shape and add volume to the breast.
Partial Breast Reconstruction
In cases of lumpectomy, alterations in shape or volume may be present in some areas of the breast. In these cases, reconstruction can be achieved using local/locoregional flaps, restoring the lost shape and volume.
Oncoplastic Surgery
This involves performing a lumpectomy/quadrantectomy, and in the same procedure, carrying out plastic surgery procedures on the breast to fill the defect and maintain the breast's shape.
